IMO the best thing to do is try to find out as much as you can about the charity, particularly how it spends its money and the amount it spends. I remember after the tsunami a ton of people donated to one of the big charities for tsunami relief... that charity then put the money into the bank for future use. Anyways after that, I crossed that charity off of my list of those to donate to.

Unless those shares had just been issued, you aren't helping the company... you are buying them off of someone else.

I'm going to find the future of charities in the next few years a little interesting as a certain someone said he was going to pass a law that was going to put a cap on the amount of tax reductions a person can get for charitable giving. I don't think those benefactors will directly stop giving, however I believe the loss of the tax shelter will hit their finances and reduce some of their givings indirectly.

There's a plan. Rather than begging for money whilst imbuing guilt, why not earn some credentials and seek endorsement from trustworthy public figures, for example?

That would encourage me to donate.
